For successful snow and ice management,

Philadelphia Streets Commissioner Tolson urges residents to

 follow these tips:
______________________________________________

  1. Apply any commercial de-icer on steps and sidewalks early to prevent residual moisture from freezing over and creating icy conditions.

  2. Clear a sidewalk path at least 30 wide within 6 hours of the end of the storm
as listed in the Philadelphia Code (10-720)

  3. Clear snow from neighborhood sewer drains to allow melting snow to drain.

  4. Be conscious of the environment.  Use de-icing salts only as much as needed.
One pound of de-icer can cover 100 to 200 square feet.

  5. Salt should be applied as soon as a light accumulation has developed on the surface. This will break the bond between additional accumulations and the pavement surface, and will make it easier to shovel.

  6. A final light application of a de-icer may be required after removal is completed to melt the residual snow.

  7. Make sure you park your car as far away from the corner as possible. Cars parked too close to the corner limit the turning radius of salting vehicles.

  8. Stay tuned to local media for further updates.

  9. Check on sick and elderly neighbors.

  10. To report a street in need of salting or plowing or for more information on any Streets Department program or service, call 3-1-1.

  11. Additional information is available online at www.phila.gov/streets/Snow.html

~ Philadelphia Residents to Earn Rewards for Curbside Recycling
In December, 2009, Mayor Nutter announced the launch of the Philadelphia Recycling Rewards program in the Strawberry Mansion neighborhood of North Philadelphia, the first region to participate in the program that will be citywide by the summer of 2010.

Sign up for the program at www.phillyrecyclingpays.com

The roll out schedule is as follows:
     > February 2010: North Philadelphia
     > March 2010: Lower Northeast, Frankford and Logan Sections
     > April 2010: West and Southwest Philadelphia

> May 2010: Center City and South Philadelphia

> June 2010: Northeast Philadelphia
     > July 2010: Northwest Philadelphia

Philadelphia Recycling Rewards is a partnership between the Streets Department and RecycleBank. The program will allow residents with City provided recycling collection to earn points that can be redeemed through RecycleBank for discounts, full-value gift cards or charitable contributions at hundreds of participating local and national merchants and non-profits.

Philadelphia is now the largest City in the United States to reward residents for their recycling efforts. RecycleBank's partnership with cities have proven to increase the amount of recyclable materials collected and aid the local economy when rewards are redeemed at local merchants.

The program is anticipated to bring the City's recycling diversion rate-- the amount of recyclable materials that are diverted away from landfills-to record levels. Every ton of waste diverted from landfills saves the city about $65. The program is pay for performance and shares the savings for additional tons of recycling collected above and beyond current levels.

According to City of Philadelphia Director of Sustainability Katherine Gajewski, Philadelphia Recycling Rewards is the City of Philadelphia's biggest Greenworks initiative to date in helping the City reach its goal of becoming the Greenest City in America, "Greenworks Philadelphia sets out ambitious recycling goals including a 20 percent diversion rate by 2011 and 25 percent by 2015. Philadelphia Recycling Rewards will help the City achieve and hopefully exceed those goals."

   Bok Field Track

Street Cleaning: The Sports Complex Special Services District has secured a new, national company for cleaning streets in the four districts that make up the SCSSD.  They have purchased new equipment that will soon be in use.
Click here for a map of the four districts that are covered by the SCSSD.

> These services are paid for by the SCSSD as part of their commitment to building and maintaining good neighborhood relations. This is only one of the services they provide for our neighborhood.
> Their primary purpose is to clear trash, debris, etc. in the streets.
> They are not allowed to go onto private property, driveways or yards to pickup items.
> Their schedule is tracked, monitored and documented each day to assure a regular cleaning within the 36 sub-districts that the SCSSD is cleaning.

Spectrum Demolition: The 'farewell events' for the Spectrum are planned for September.  These will be posted once information has been confirmed.

> Demolition of the building will be announced and take place sometime after September.

> 'PhillyLive' is the name of the complex that will replace the Spectrum.  The design and details of this are still in the planning stages.
